In the past, I would sometimes pitch up to client sites to conduct consultation sessions with managers and colleagues on culture change and find that the people in the room didn’t know why they were there. I learnt a lot from these times - and now when I work with clients I am clear about the need for strong and clear communications.

Many HR teams find themselves being positioned by default as the sole owners and champions of culture. Let be honest we all know that sh*t stinks! Plus, it creates an impossible dynamic that will stop progress (it makes me think of the old joke about how many psychologists it takes to change a lightbulb – its got to want to change obviously).

I’m certainly learning a lot about myself in terms of my reaction to significant change. I don’t know about you, but my real life is fast-paced and pushy, I make sure I have lots of things on the go, a lot of demands to balance. It’s my natural style to move fast and it means I don’t really get time to reflect unless I carve it out.
